Chaitra Navratri 2023 is around the corner. it a sacred festival celebrated every year in the Hindu calendar, starting on the Pratipada date of Shukla Paksha in the Chaitra month. The festival is marked by the establishment of Kalash on the first day, followed by the worship of the nine forms of Maa Durga. This year, the Chaitra Navratri is scheduled from 22nd March to 30th March. Hinduism believes that during these holy nine days, one should refrain from making eight mistakes that can lead to inauspicious results.

Avoid these things during Chaitra Navratri 2023

  1. Akhand Jyoti - If you are setting up the Kalash or lighting the Akhand Jyoti during Navratri, ensure that your house is not left empty. Someone from the household should be near Mata ki Chowki to offer prayers.
  2. Hair or beard cutting - Those fasting for nine days during Navratri should avoid cutting their beard-mustache and hair. It is considered inauspicious to shave children during this time as it might upset the mother.
  3. Avoiding onion and garlic - Onion and garlic are tamasic foods and should be avoided during Navratri. Using them in food during this time is considered prohibited.
  4. Avoid black clothes - Wearing black clothes during the auspicious Navratri should be avoided. Work like sewing and embroidery is also prohibited. Maintaining cleanliness during Navratri is a must.
  5. Consumption of alcohol and meat - During Navratri, meat, fish and alcohol should be avoided. Doing so is believed to be inauspicious.
  6. Use of leather items - Those observing Navratri fast should not use leather belts, slippers, shoes or bags. These items are taken off even before entering the temple for darshan.
  7. Nail cutting - Nail cutting is also prohibited during these nine days. It is advisable to trim nails before the start of Navratri.
  8. Consumption of grains or salt - During Navratri, grains and salt should not be consumed. Instead, buckwheat flour, samak rice, water chestnut flour, sago khichdi and rock salt can be used in food.
