Chaitra Navratri 2026 is a sacred festival dedicated to the nine forms of Goddess Durga. Each day of Navratri is believed to have special spiritual importance, and devotees perform different rituals to seek blessings for health, peace and prosperity. Many people also pray during Navratri to solve family problems, remove obstacles and seek happiness in married life. The fifth day of Navratri is considered very powerful because it is dedicated to Maa Skandamata, the mother of Lord Kartikeya.

According to astrologers and religious beliefs, worshipping Maa Skandamata on this day can bring peace at home and blessings of a child for couples.

Chaitra Navratri 2026 Day 5: Why Maa Skandamata Is Worshipped

Maa Skandamata is the fifth form of Goddess Durga and is worshipped on the fifth day of Navratri. Her name comes from her being the mother (Mata) of Lord Skanda, also known as Kartikeya, who is the commander of the divine army. She is usually shown with four arms, holding lotus flowers in her hands, while carrying child Kartikeya in her lap. One of her hands remains in Abhaya Mudra, which means protection and blessings. She rides a lion and is also called Padmasana Devi because she is sometimes shown sitting on a lotus.

The story of Maa Skandamata is linked to the demon Tarakasura, who had received a boon that only Lord Shiva’s son could defeat him. Because Lord Shiva lived as a yogi, the demon believed no one could kill him. Goddess Parvati performed severe penance to marry Shiva, and their son Skanda was later born with divine power to destroy Tarakasura. Maa Skandamata is believed to represent both motherly love and strong protection. Devotees worship her to receive wisdom, prosperity, and fulfilment of wishes.
