During the Vedas, Varanasi has been referred to as Kashi. It had officially been renamed Varanasi in 1956 although it was originally known as Benarasi before that, though the name is now said to be a variant of Vaviana. This name was derived from the meeting of the Varuna and Assi rivers. What is fascinating about Varanasi was that its rituals were known openly in many river ghats used for everything from bathing to cremation of the dead. Yoga, blessings, massages, shaves, and games of cricket are among the other activities you'll find performed by the river's edge.

Kashi Vishwanath Temple

In Varanasi, the Kashi Vishwanath Temple is a very significant and revered temple. Every year it is dedicated to Lord Shiva, attracting millions of followers and pilgrims. The temple is an amazing architectural wonder with its golden spires and domes.

Chunar Fort

Chunar Fort, about 40 miles from Varanasi, is an ancient tourist site with a panoramic view of the Ganges River. It has a long history since the advent of the Gupta Empire, and it saw different dynasty's rule. The fortress's complex architecture and fascinating stories have made it famous.

Ramnagar Fort and Museum

Ramnagar fort and museum was built in the 18th century by the King of Varanasi, Kashi Naresh. It is situated on the eastern bank of the river. Now the fort is home to the current King, Anant Narayan Singh. It's 14 miles from the railway station and 2 miles from the Banaras Hindu University, BHU.  It's on the opposite side of Tulsi Ghat. The fort is open from 10am to 5pm, and it's closed on the festival of Holi. On Sundays and holidays, the forts are open as well.

Godowlia Market

You must visit the Godowlia Bazaar if you wish to have a genuine experience of Varanasi's colorful regional culture. A variety of goods, such as traditional clothes, crafts, jewelry, spices and street fare are sold by shops and stands on this busy market. It is an excellent place to discover and shop for souvenirs.

Banaras Silk Emporium

Varanasi has become famous for its excellent silk sarees and fabrics. A popular destination for the lover of silks is the Silk Emporium in Banaras. There are a variety of intricate woven silk products, including sarees, sarongs and dresses. It is the perfect spot for admiring Banarasi's silk textile art.

There are so many other things to see and do in Varanasi, such as spirituality, cultural or historical sites. A particularly recommended experience in Varanasi is exploring the narrow lanes,ghats and riverbank steps or taking part in a Ganga bathing ritual at the banks of the Ganges.
