It is crucial to understand that the cultivation of the Langda mango began in Banaras, Uttar Pradesh, before we begin the tale of this fruit. This mango variety has been grown for nearly 300 years.

A tree was planted by the sage who visited the Banaras Shiva temple. It is said that a priest who worked in a Banaras temple dedicated to Lord Shiva once had weak legs. The priest was known as the "lame priest" because of this infirmity. Once upon a time, a monk visited the temple to stay, and while he was there, he planted two mango trees.

The monk informed the priest that the plant's first fruit would be offered to Lord Shiva when it matured into a tree and began to bear fruit. In addition, the monk assured the priest that he would not share this tree's fruit with anybody else.

After many years, when the tree began to bear fruit, the priest first dedicated those fruits to Lord Shiva, and in this way, the Langda mango became well-known throughout Banaras. Since the monk had forbade giving the mangoes from those trees to anyone, the king of Banaras eventually grabbed some mangoes from the priest as well.
