Looking for red and sweet watermelon? Know these tips before buying

Watermelon: Most of us would like to eat watermelon all year round. However, as it is a seasonal, it’s best to purchase this fruit during its peak season -- between May and September. But the biggest problem is how to identify the right one which is red from inside and sweet to taste, and that too without cutting.

Only a melon which is sweet, tastes good. Else, it’s a total waste. We bring to you some tips that will help you to identify whether your favourite fruit is sweet and red or not.

How to identify red and sweet watermelon?

Choose heavy and spotted watermelons

Stay away from shiny watermelons. They may seem tempting but are tasteless. Choose the heaviest one in its size because a watermelon consists of 92% water, which is what makes it so juicy. Heavier the fruit, more water it has.

After that, choose one that is pale and spotted. If the watermelon is ripe, it will have fields stains on it. There should be a large, yellow spot on one side of the watermelon.

Round, not oval

Look for a melon that is rounder and more evenly shaped and not an oval one. The rounder ones are sweeter, while the more oval ones tend to be watery and less flavorful. Also, ensure there are no irregular lumps on the surface.

Tap the fruit

Another way to find a ripe watermelon is to tap on the top. A ripe watermelon has a deep sound while an overripe watermelon has a hollow or flat sound. In this way, you can pick a sweet watermelon through its sound.

Look for dry stem

Choose one that has had sufficient time to ripen and mature. Check the stem which should be dry and yellow-brown. A green stem means that the fruit is not yet ripe and will lack flavor and sweetness.

Identify injection holes

You must learn to identify the injection holes in the watermelon. Sometimes sellers inject sugar into the fruit to make it sweet. This leave holes on the surface which is visible to the discerning eye.
