Not Just for Erectile Dysfunction, Viagra May Prove Beneficial For Your Bones, Study Finds

Viagra might be doing more than treating erectile dysfunction. A new study out of China suggests the little blue pill could also help build stronger bones. As per research published in April 2025 on PubMed, Viagra may prove beneficial for people suffering from osteoporosis.

Scientists from Peking University found that sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra, can help human stem cells turn into osteoblasts. These are the cells responsible for creating new bone tissue. In simpler words, this pill might soon help more than just your love life.

Could Viagra Be The Next Big Thing In Treatment Of Osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis affects over 3 million Britons and makes bones brittle and weak. As we age, bone loss becomes a serious problem, leading to fractures and chronic pain. Current treatments exist, but this new study suggests Viagra could offer another option.

The research says sildenafil boosts the production of bone-forming cells and may help prevent fractures. Older adults dealing with back pain or recovering from injuries might benefit. The Sun reported on June 20 that this could bring real relief to people already familiar with the medication for other reasons.

What The Experts Say

Dr Menglong Hu and Dr Likun Wu, the lead researchers, explained, “Our findings offer new insights into the physiological effects of the medicine. Sildenafil enhanced stem cell osteogenic differentiation and inhibited bone loss, it may usefully treat osteoporosis.”

There’s even some talk about other potential benefits. Researchers say Viagra might also reduce the risk of dementia by improving brain blood flow. But they also urge caution – more studies are needed before anyone starts prescribing it for that.

The researchers added, “There are other treatments available, but it would be handy to have more cheap and readily available drugs. Any new drug must be evaluated. This is time-consuming, expensive and risky. But sildenafil is approved and safe.”

Viagra isn\’t a quick fix or a miracle cure. Like any drug, it has side effects. Doctors are warning people not to take it for bone health without proper medical advice.

Still, the findings are promising. A drug long tied to one purpose might soon be known for more. If confirmed by further research, Viagra could play a surprising new role in the fight against osteoporosis, turning a well-known bedroom remedy into a bone-boosting solution.
