Sadhguru Tips: In his enlightening discourse, Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev touched on the age-old debate: Does God exist? Through an engaging narrative, he brings forward the perspectives of two individuals who approached Gautama Buddha with the same question but received opposing answers. Sadhguru’s tale not only addresses the belief in God but also highlights the importance of seeking knowledge rather than settling for mere belief.
The Devotee’s Question: Is There No God?
The first man Sadhguru mentions is a devout follower of Rama. He had spent his entire life immersed in devotion, chanting “Ram Ram” in every action. As he aged, however, doubt began to creep in. He wondered if his lifelong dedication had been in vain. So, early one morning, he approached Gautama Buddha and asked, “Is there God?” For the first time, Gautama gave a clear answer: No. This declaration relieved the man and those around him, as it released them from the constant internal struggle of whether or not God exists.
The Materialist’s Question: Is There God?
Later that evening, a Charvaka—a materialist who believed only in what he could see—approached Gautama with the same question. This man had spent his life convincing others that there was no God. However, as his own life passed, a sliver of doubt crept into his mind. What if, after all his efforts to deny God’s existence, he was wrong? To his surprise, Gautama answered this time with a resounding Yes. This caused confusion among the people who had earlier rejoiced over Buddha’s declaration of “No God” in the morning.
The Real Message: Belief vs. Seeking Truth
Sadhguru explains that whether one believes in God or denies God, both are rooted in belief rather than knowledge. Belief, according to him, has no connection with reality. Instead of forming beliefs, he encourages people to embrace the unknown with curiosity. When one admits, I do not know, it opens the door to seeking the truth.
