Sadhguru Tips

Sadhguru Tips: Although it is easy to ask someone to detach and move on, it is easier said than done. As we get involved with someone, we form an attachment, with different people showing different attachment styles. Later, it gets very difficult to detach from that person in an emotional context. Sadhguru talks about the importance of emotional intelligence and helps us understand the whys and hows of emotional attachment

Mind vs Emotion

He says that in modern times, most people’s thoughts run ahead of their emotions. However, for some, their emotion takes the wheel, navigating their choices in life. Sadhguru talks about how the mind works differently from emotions. He gives an analogy of two people in a relationship. He says, when you like someone, you form an emotional attachment to the person. When we find out something wrong in the person, our mind says the person is not good. However, it is not very easy for our emotions to understand that. This is why many are not able to leave the lingering thoughts and feelings for the person.

How to deal with this?

Sadhguru says that the more you try to control your emotions by telling them to not think about something, the more they think. He gives the analogy of a monkey, where if you are asked to not think about a monkey, all you can do is think about a monkey. You cannot help this. Therefore, when you feel something, let yourself feel those uncomfortable feelings so that you let it pass and move on.

Distancing yourself

He reflects on the importance of practice that can help one distance their physiological self from their psychological self. Moreover, it is important to understand that feelings and emotions are just a reaction to the data stored in our memory. He gives the analogy of a traffic jam. When we are stuck in a traffic jam we feel anxious, however, once we are on the flight and look down on the traffic, it looks beautiful.
