Regardless of gender, everyone becomes frustrated when a pimple comes on their face. Unfortunately, this restlessness can lead to impulsive actions, such as attempting to pop or scratch the pimple without considering the potential consequences. Recently, a person made this very mistake, and the outcome proved to be hazardous.
Doctor advises not to pop the pimples
The report highlights advice from Dr. Ever Arias, a practitioner at the University of California, Irvine Medical Center. Dr. Arias emphasises the importance of not popping or picking pimples on the face. He particularly warns about a specific region where bursting pimples can potentially cause a severe infection, to the extent that it might result in a person’s demise.
Dr. Arias shared concerning cases from his own experience, where some patients suffered from life-threatening infections after attempting to pop pimples. He recounted an incident where a patient had popped a pimple near the nose, unaware that this region was in proximity to the cavernous sinus, a critical area housing nerves leading to the brain.
Consequently, popping the pimple damaged the skin, resulting in an open wound that provided an entry point for bacteria into the bloodstream. This led to a severe infection, causing the formation of blood clots and the spread of the infection to the brain tissues. Such an infection could trigger brain and spinal cord swelling, potentially leading to the patient’s death. Dr. Arias also noted that symptoms of this condition include confusion, and fever, and, in severe cases, it can indeed be fatal.
Let the pimple dry naturally
While not every instance of popping pimples will result in such dire consequences, there’s always a potential risk involved. If an infection does occur, the situation can deteriorate significantly. The highest risk of infection occurs when pimples appear on the face, particularly in the area extending from the bridge of the nose to around the mouth. In such cases, it’s advisable to allow the pimples to dry naturally and refrain from scratching them with one’s hands, as this can inadvertently create wounds and escalate the risk of infection.
