Vande Bharat Sleeper Trains: Prototype to Roll Out by June 2026, 120 Trains by 2032

The order of 120 trains will be completed over the next seven years, with full deployment expected by 2032.

India is preparing for a major upgrade in long-distance travel with the launch of Vande Bharat Sleeper Trains. The first prototype of the sleeper version is expected to be ready by June 2026, with a total of 120 trains scheduled to be delivered by 2032.

Project Timeline and Production

The manufacturing of 120 Vande Bharat Sleeper train sets has been awarded under a joint venture between Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) and its international partner. Each train set will include 16 modern coaches designed for overnight travel.

The original plan was to roll out the first prototype by September 2025, but the timeline has now shifted to June 2026. Once the prototype is ready, it will undergo 60 days of trials before regular production begins.

Features and Design

The sleeper trains are based on the proven Vande Bharat design already running on Indian tracks, but with an upgraded interior layout suitable for overnight journeys. Each train will feature modern berths, advanced safety measures, bio-vacuum toilets, and improved passenger amenities including pantry facilities.

Production work has already started at the Latur facility, and spare parts for multiple train sets are being prepared in advance to ensure faster rollout.

Future Outlook

The order of 120 trains will be completed over the next seven years, with full deployment expected by 2032. These trains will provide a faster, more comfortable, and safer alternative for overnight rail travel, covering long-distance routes across the country.

Why It Matters

  • Modern Overnight Travel: Brings speed, safety, and comfort to long-distance passengers.
  • Boost to Domestic Manufacturing: Production within India strengthens the Make in India initiative.
  • Economic Impact: Faster deliveries and improved services expected to boost railway revenues.
