The internet is flooded with shocking claims that coffee may contain up to 10% cockroaches. A viral video featuring Sudhir Ashta, a weight-loss expert from Mumbai, has sparked panic. He says, “Koffee mein aapko pata hai das percent cockroach hote hain. Koffee ek aisi cheez hai das pratishat sarkari roop se FDA, jo America ki sabse badi agency hai food ko regulate karne ke liye, das pratishat cockroaches coffee ke andar mein aa jaate hain. Poori tarah se cockroach-free coffee ho nahi sakti.”
Another video also claims that dried cockroaches are mixed in coffee powder to improve taste. These statements have left many people worried about whether coffee is safe.
This does not mean actual cockroaches are in your cup. It refers to defect levels in raw green coffee beans before roasting. As per the FDA’s Food Defect Action Levels, up to 10% of beans can be insect-infested or damaged by pests like the coffee berry borer.
Once beans are cleaned, roasted, and processed, insect fragments are minimal and invisible. The FDA treats these tiny fragments (like shell pieces or dust) as aesthetic and not harmful to health.
Experts say no. The FDA allows small traces of insect fragments in many foods like chocolate, nuts, spices, and coffee, as long as they are within safety limits.
In finished coffee products, this percentage is much lower than 10%. These figures show the maximum defect limit, not the actual amount found in your coffee. Reputed coffee brands maintain strict quality checks to keep these levels well below the allowed limits.
