Eating clean but still not experiencing weight loss as planned? You're not alone. Many people think they’re doing everything right, ditching junk food, cutting sugar, and switching to home-cooked meals, but the weighing scale doesn’t move. The issue might not be what you eat, but how you eat it.

Nutritionist and dietician Dr Shalini Singhal recently shared a video on Instagram highlighting the five most common mistakes that quietly stall weight loss. These mistakes often go unnoticed and are hidden in our daily eating habits.

Weight Loss Slowed By These Daily Habits

Dr Singhal’s first red flag is the use of oil and ghee in home cooking. “If you go overboard, then the weight loss pace will slow down,” she said. Even if you're not eating fried food, a heavy hand with oil can turn healthy meals into calorie bombs.

Next, she calls out the habit of ordering food or eating out too often. “How many meals did you order from outside or ate outside?” she asked. Restaurant meals can contain more fat, salt, and sugar than you’d expect, even when labelled healthy.

Dr Singhal also warns about liquid calories. “Are you drinking fruit juices, are you taking Rooh Afza?” she asks. Drinks loaded with sugar (even traditional ones) can quietly derail your calorie count for the day.

Mindless Snacking Could Be Holding You Back

Snacking without thinking is another common trap. “You picked up a biscuit, half a burfi, extra dry fruits… these all add up,” she pointed out. Many people forget to account for tiny bites between meals that sneak in extra calories.

Lastly, Dr Singhal stresses that even healthy foods like fruits and nuts should be eaten in moderation. Just because something is good for you doesn’t mean it’s calorie-free. Overeating healthy snacks can slow your progress without you realising it.

Weight loss isn’t just about choosing the right foods, it’s about portion control, consistency, and awareness. Experts say keeping a close eye on how much you're eating and drinking can make all the difference.

As Dr Singhal puts it, even small slip-ups can have a big impact. Fixing these five habits may help you break past the plateau and finally see progress. If you're eating clean and still stuck, it might be time to change how you eat, not just what you eat.
