The incident triggered panic in the locality. Residents quickly informed authorities, after which fire department and NDRF teams arrived and launched rescue operations. It is feared that some people may still be trapped under the debris.
According to officials, the building was already in a dilapidated state. The entire area has been cordoned off, and debris clearance is ongoing. Nearby buildings are also being inspected for structural safety.
Eyewitnesses said that the building began to shake moments after the winds picked up. Within seconds, the structure crumbled, sending a cloud of dust into the air. “We heard a loud noise and saw people screaming. Many rushed in to help before teams arrived,” said a local resident.
Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and assured strict action if any negligence is found. “This is a tragic incident. Relief efforts are underway, and we are monitoring the situation closely,” he said in a statement.
Preliminary reports suggest that unauthorized construction and lack of maintenance may have contributed to the collapse. A formal inquiry has been initiated to ascertain the cause and identify those responsible, if any.
Meanwhile, Delhi’s weather department has issued alerts for more rain and strong winds in the coming days, urging residents in vulnerable structures to take precautionary measures. Local civic bodies have also been directed to inspect old and unstable buildings in similar areas.
