According to Devendra Fadnavis, deputy chief minister of Maharashtra, eleven attendees who were sitting outside during the Sunday ceremony for the Maharashtra Bhushan awards died from heat stroke.
Eknath Shinde, the chief minister, also visited a hospital where fifty people were being treated for illnesses caused by the heat.
Social activist Appasaheb Dharmadhikari received the award from the Maharashtra government, which was given out by Home Minister Amit Shah. The event was place at Navi Mumbai, where a high of 38 degrees Celsius was recorded for the day.
The award ceremony was also attended by Shinde and Fadnavis.
Thousands of the social activist's supporters attended the celebration, which was held in a sizable site in Navi Mumbai. The prize presentation began at 11.30 am and lasted until 1 pm.
The area was crowded with people and equipped with audio and video equipment so that they could watch the event. However, there was no shed covering the audience seating arrangement.
Mr. Shinde described the occurrence as "unfortunate" and promised to pay the families of those killed 5 lakh rupees in compensation.
"As per the briefing received from doctors, 7-8 people have died today, while 24 are being treated. This is a case of sunstroke. Some 50 people were admitted to the hospital, of which 24 are still there while the rest have been discharged after primary treatment," Mr Shinde told reporters while coming out from the hospital.
According to a tweet from Mr. Fadnavis, the government will cover the cost of treating people who got sick from the heat.
