2036 Olympics: Anurag Thakur, India's Sports Minister, asserted on Sunday that India is well-positioned to host the 2036 Olympic Games. Speaking at the News9 Global Summit, Thakur emphasized the country's remarkable growth across various sectors, particularly in sports. He highlighted India's recent success at major international events, expressing optimism about India becoming a top-10 sporting nation by 2036 and aiming for a top-5 position by 2047.
Assertive Plea to the IOC
Thakur made a compelling case for India to host the 2036 Olympics, citing the nation's substantial population and its enthusiastic engagement with Olympic sports. He argued that it would be logical for the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to award the hosting rights to India, especially considering the country's burgeoning stature globally.
Strategic Roadmap
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had previously conveyed India's eagerness to host the 2036 Summer Olympics during the IOC session in Mumbai. Thakur reiterated this commitment and outlined India's strategic roadmap, indicating a desire to host the 2030 Youth Olympics before the 2036 Olympics. He underlined India's economic ascent, projecting it as the world's third-largest economy within the next five years, fostering the belief that the country's sports infrastructure would significantly advance by 2036.
Demographic Advantage
Thakur underscored India's demographic advantage, with a population of 1.4 billion, a considerable portion of which is under 35. He portrayed this demographic profile as a compelling factor, creating a substantial market for the Olympics.
