Union Home Minister Amit Shah Calls All-Party Meeting on Manipur Violence, Sharad Pawar Unable to Attend

Manipur Violence: The situation in the violent Manipur will be discussed during an all-party meeting that Union Home Minister Amit Shah will preside over on Saturday in the nation’s capital. The meeting will start at 3 o’clock. Due to prior obligations, the head of the Nationalist Congress Party, Sharad Pawar, would be absent from this meeting. However, two other members of his party, NCP General Secretary Narendra Verma and Manipur NCP Chief Soran Iboyaima Singh, will take his place.

Internet Ban Extended as State Grapples with Unrest

Since May 3, there have been violent incidents in Manipur. In an effort to prevent any future disruption of the calm in the wake of the recent events, the state administration extended the ban on internet services until Sunday. Sonia Gandhi, the leader of the Congress Parliamentary Party, claimed that the unprecedented violence has “left a deep wound in the conscience of our nation” and has had an impact on Manipurese citizens’ lives. She made a plea for harmony and peace in the region. Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the Congress, questioned the decision to hold the all-party meeting at a time when Prime Minister Narendra Modi is on a State visit to the United States, implying that he doesn’t value the discussion of the current situation in Manipur in the wake of ethnic violence and clashes.

Rahul Gandhi Slams Prime Minister’s Silence on Manipur Violence

Manipur has been on fire for 50 days, yet the prime minister has said nothing, Gandhi wrote in a tweet. When the Prime Minister is not present in the nation, an all-party meeting is convened nonetheless! Clearly, the Prime Minister does not value this meeting. Conflicts that broke out at a rally called by the All Tribals Students Union (ATSU) to protest the demand that Meiteis be included to the Scheduled Tribe (ST) list caused the state to descend into violence on May 3.
