Massive landslide: More than 300 travellers were stranded between Dharchula and Gunji following a massive landslide in Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand. The Lipulekh-Tawaghat road, 45 kilometres above Dharchula and near Lakhanpur, was washed away 100 metres after a major portion of a hill fell on the road.
The district administration said to the media, “On the outskirts of Pithoragarh, the Lipulekh-Tawaghat motor road, 45 km above Dharchula, near Lakhanpur, has been washed away 100 meters due to a landslide. About 300 people are trapped in Dharchula and Gunji.”
Reports said the road is expected to reopen to traffic in two days.
The weather service has issued a dust storm and thundershower warning for several districts. They include Almora, Bageshwar, Chamoli, Champawat, Dehradun, Garhwal, Hardwar, Nainital, Pithoragarh, Rudraprayag, Tehri Garhwal, Udham Singh Nagar, and Uttarkashi districts.
The police have also issued an advisory, advising all pilgrims to remain in safe areas.
They added, “Pilgrims please stay at safe places, do not travel unnecessarily, and park vehicles at safe places, landslides/geo. Travel only when the weather is clear.”
“All the devotees coming for Yamunotri and Gangotri Dham Yatra are requested to plan their journey after taking the weather forecast, keep rain cover, umbrella and woollen/warm clothes with them during the journey.”
