81-year-old Covid-19 patient dies by suicide in Nagpur hospital

An 81-year-old COVID-19 patient allegedly committed suicide at the Government Medical College and Hospital in Maharashtra’s Nagpur city, police said on Tuesday.

The incident took place on Monday evening when the patient, identified as Purushottam Aappaji Gajbhiye, went to the bathroom in the COVID-19 ward of the medical facility, an official from Ajni police station said.

Dr. Kanchan Wankhede, Medical Superintendent (In-charge), GMC Nagpur, informed that the old man, who was admitted in the Covid-19 ward of the hospital, committed suicide by hanging himself using an oxygen pipe inside a bathroom.

A sanitation staff, who had gone to the bathroom for cleaning, had alerted the doctors after there was no response from inside the bathroom despite repeated knocking on the door.

A case of accidental death has been registered.
The police said no suicide note was found.
