Aadhar Card: In its updated rules for Requesting Entities, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) said that entities must get people’ informed consent either on paper or online before performing Aadhaar authentications. According to a press release, UIDAI has encouraged Requesting Entities—those responsible for conducting online authentications—to make sure that people are aware of the types of data being collected and the objectives of Aadhaar authentications.
What did the UIDAI say?
In line with these standards, according to UIDAI, REs must get the people’s informed consent before completing Aadhaar authentication. Additionally, it has been made clear that records of authentication operations, including the consent obtained, must only be stored for the time frame specified in the legislation.
In the release, UIDAI notified, “And purging of such logs after expiry of the said time period shall also be done as per the Aadhaar Act and its regulations.”
Aadhaar verification services are offered to residents by Requesting Entities. They are accountable for providing the Central Identities Data Repository with the Aadhaar number and demographic/biometric OTP information for the purpose of authentication. The Aadhaar numbers, which are used for authenticating transactions, are secure and confidential, according to UIDAI, thus REs should be friendly to residents and reassure them of this.
UIDAI asks to notify for suspicious conduct
Additionally, it has advised these organisations to notify the UIDAI right away of any suspicious conduct involving authentications, such as suspected resident impersonation or any compromise or fraud by any authentication operator. UIDAI advises that REs typically avoid storing Aadhaar in either physical or electronic form without redacting or masking the initial 8 digits of the identification number.
UIDAI has instructed REs to only keep an Aadhaar number if they have been given permission to do so and in the manner specified by it. Additionally, it has urged the REs to assist UIDAI and other organisations it has delegated for any security audits as necessary by law and regulations, as well as to work with them.
