A few weeks before the elections in Karnataka, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has filed a petition in the Karnataka High Court seeking recognition as a national party. It has been said that the delay is hampering his ability to contest the elections.
The petition, filed by AAP Karnataka convenor Prithvi Reddy, states that the party fulfills all the criteria to become a national party, but the Election Commission (ECI) has refused to grant it that status.
According to the guidelines of the Election Commission, a party can be recognized as a national party if it secures at least 6 percent of the valid votes polled in four or more states in a general election or an assembly election, and in a Lok Sabha election. Wins at least four seats, such party from any State or States; or wins at least 2 percent of the total Lok Sabha seats in a general election from at least three different states; Or it is recognized as a state party in at least four states.
It has been said in the petition that the Aam Aadmi Party fulfills the requirements set for a national party by its performance in the last elections held in Delhi, Punjab, Goa and Gujarat.
The petition alleges that the Election Commission is delaying recognition of AAP as a national party despite repeated requests and applications from the party. In the petition, the court has been requested to direct the Election Commission to give the status of national party to 'AAP' within a certain time limit.
AAP has said that it wants to contest the Karnataka assembly elections to be held next month. The party says that getting the status of a national party will help it campaign across the state and garner support.
