AAP’s Shelly Oberoi appointed as the new mayor of Delhi, Arvind Kejriwal says ‘the goons have lost’

Shelly Oberoi: After three failed attempts, Delhi has finally found its mayor in Shelly Oberoi. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate beat Bhatariya Janata Party (BJP) counterpart Rekha Gupta by 34 votes to claim victory. None of the Congress councillors came to caste their votes.

Shelly Oberoi is the new mayor of Delhi

Of the total 266 polled, Shelly Oberoi received 150 votes, while Rekha Gupta won 116 votes held after a decisive victory for AAP in the Supreme Court. Delhi Lt Governor V K Saxena gave his nod to convene the municipal House for holding the Mayoral election following the Supreme Court order.

“The goons have lost, the public won. Today in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, the people of Delhi won and hooliganism was defeated,” AAP chief Kejriwal said.

The AAP had won the civic elections held in November. However, the mayoral elections were postponed three times after AAP and BJP party created ruckus in the parliament. AAP had reached Supreme Court to challenging BJP’s contention that alderman appointed by LG can vote.

Ruling out the judgment Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud had said, “Nominated members cannot go for election. The constitutional provision is very clear,” the court observed.

Delhi MCD elections

AAP had won 134 of 250 wards in the municipal election which marked first  after the merging of the MCD and redrawing of constituencies last year. For the past 15 years, BJP has been controlling the civic body.

The MCD house was stalled three times, earlier on January 6 and 24, and later again on February 6.
