Abhijit Sen, one of India’s leading agriculture economists passes away

Noted agricultural economist Abhijit Sen passed away on August 29 at the age of 72. Sen, a former member of the Planning Commission and one of India’s leading authorities on the rural economy, suffered a heart attack around 11 pm on Monday and was rushed to the hospital.

“He suffered a heart attack around 11 pm. We rushed him to the hospital, but it was all over by the time we got there,” Pronab Sen told PTI.

Abhijit Sen was a renowned agriculture economist and a former member of the Planning commission of India. In a career spanning more than four decades, Abhijit Sen taught economics at Jawaharlal Nehru University and held several important government positions including the Chair of the Commission of Agricultural Cost and Prices.

Abhijit Sen, from 2004 to 2014was a member of the Planning Commission of India when Manmohan Singh was the Prime Minister of the country.

Apart from his work with the CACP and Planning Commission, Sen’s expertise was regularly tapped by the UNDP, the Food and Agriculture Organisation, the International Fund for Agricultural Development and the Asian Development Bank.

In 2010, he was awarded the Padma Bhushan for public service.

He is survived by his wife, the economist Jayati Ghosh, and daughter, Jahnavi Sen, who is deputy editor of The Wire.
