Advocate files complaint against Twitter India, its MD for ‘spreading communal hatred’

Twitter India is under a fresh attack after a complaint was filed against the micro-blogging site and its MD Manish Maheshwari with Cyber cell for alleged spread of communal hatred on its platform. Twitter is already in rift with BJP led government at the Centre over the non-compliance of new social media rules even after various warnings.

The complaint has been filed by advocate Aditya Singh Deshwal and addressed to DCP Cyber Cell of the Delhi Police sought registration of an FIR against Twitter Communications India Prviate Ltd, Manish Maheshwari, MD, Twitter India, Shagufta Kamran, Public Policy manager of Twitter India as well as Armin Navabi and Susanna Macintrye, the founder and CEO respectively of Republic Atheist, news agency ANI reported.

In his complaint, The complainant has cited that a picture of Goddess Kali shared by a Twitterati who goes with the handle, Atheist Republic, has been posted with the purpose to cause annoyance, inconvenience, danger, obstruction, insult, injury, criminal intimidation, enmity, hatred and ill will in society.

“It would also be not out of place to mention here that these posts have been put by the said user deliberately, to outrage the religious feelings of Hindus to insult our religious beliefs,” the advocate said.

Deshwal accused Twitter of showing blasphemous content from July 2011 and said that many handles have such content which pose as a threat to the communal harmony.

“Twitter on the other hand, as a Significant Social Media Intermediary (SSMN) has taken no steps to remove such content but in a blatant violation of Indian laws has been acting as an accomplice to the crime and showing such blasphemous and insulting content,” the advocate’s complaint said.

The advocate has urged the Delhi police to arrest people named in the complaint to prevent further commission of the offence.
