When Air India flight AI-171 took off from Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, Vishwas Kumar had no idea he would be the lone survivor. Just seconds into the journey to London, the Dreamliner crashed into BJ Medical College’s hostel building. The tragedy killed 241 people on board and others on the ground.

Lying on a hospital bed at Ahmedabad Civil Hospital, Vishwas, 40, is still shaken. He told DD News reporter, “Mujhe laga main bhi marne wala hoon. Mujhe khud ko believe nahi hota ki main kaise usmein se zinda baahar nikla.”

Lone Survivor Vishwas Kumar Recalls The Deadly Crash

Vishwas was seated by the window in seat 11A. He said the plane didn’t feel normal even moments after takeoff. “Takeoff ke baad ek minute ke andar laga jaise stall ho gaya. Phir light green aur white ho gayi. Suddenly, speed badh gayi aur seedha crash kar gaya.”

He remembered seeing a crack near his seat after the impact. Unbuckling quickly, he used his leg to force his way out through a broken section. “Sab mere saamne ho raha tha. Air hostess… sab log wahan miss ho gaye. Sab kuch meri nazron ke saamne tha.”

He escaped with burns and head injuries. Videos from the site show him limping out, covered in blood, yelling “Plane fatyo che!” as locals rushed to help.

His brother, Ajaykumar Ramesh, who was seated across the aisle, didn’t survive. “Where is my brother?”- Vishwas has been asking officials the same question repeatedly.

About The Tragic Ahmedabad Plane Crash Incident

There were 242 people on board, including 15 from Diu. Vishwas is the only survivor. Police have secured his ward for safety and investigation. A family friend said, “He just kept crying and asking for Ajay.” Vishwas called his family three times after the crash before his phone went silent.

Investigators suspect a dual-engine failure or a bird hit might have led to the crash. The pilot had sent a brief “Mayday” call, but the aircraft went down within 34 seconds of takeoff.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Vishwas at the hospital and directed officials to provide him with the best care. He also met families of the deceased, as rescue operations continue near the BJ Medical College hostel site
