AIIMS cyber attack: Delhi Police to gather information on Chinese hackers through Interpol

AIIMS cyber attack: In connection with the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) cyber attack case, Delhi Police has written a letter to the CBI and requested information on Chinese hackers through Interpol. The CBI is the primary point of contact for Interpol.

Cybercriminals who allegedly hacked AIIMS’s digital services and compromised the data of thousands of patients allegedly demanded Rs. 200 crore in cryptocurrency. The country’s premier institution’s servers were unavailable for several days, affecting the outpatient department (OPD) and sample collection services.

Delhi Police asked the central agency in a letter whether these IP addresses were used by a company or an individual. It has also requested information on the company that provides internet access in China.

The AIIMS server was hacked and then restored

Despite the cyber security scare, all emergency and routine patient care, as well as laboratory services, are still managed manually. Representatives from the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-IN), Delhi Police, and the Ministry of Home Affairs worked tirelessly to resolve the problem.

According to news agency PTI, internet services at AIIMS were also disabled in accordance with the recommendations of the investigating agencies. On November 25, the IFSO unit of the Delhi Police registered a case of extortion and cyber terrorism in connection with the ransomware attack.

Later, it was revealed that the cyber attack on the AIIMS, Delhi servers was suspected to have originated in China and Hong Kong, according to top government sources.

The officials claimed that the hackers successfully infiltrated five physical servers out of 100 (40 physical and 60 virtual). According to the sources, the damage would have been far worse if timely intervention had not occurred.

The data was recovered from an unaffected backup server, and the majority of its services were also restored.
