With all the accused in the Malegaon blast case of 2008 acquitted by an NIA court, BJP MP Nishikant Dubey has criticized the Congress party harshly. Dubey, speaking in Delhi on Thursday, July 31, 2025, asserted that "a Hindu cannot be a terrorist," dismissing categorically the "Saffron Terrorism" bogey, which he accuses the Congress of.

His assertion came after a special NIA court verdict declaring that there was no "reliable and cogent evidence" against the seven accused, including BJP MP Pragya Singh Thakur and Lt Col Prasad Purohit, after 17 years of legal battles. This verdict has again agitated the contentious debate on the use of the word "saffron terror."

Exposing a Narrative: Dubey's Allegations

Nishikant Dubey echoed Union Home Minister Amit Shah's statement in the Rajya Sabha that "a Hindu cannot be a terrorist. All the terrorists of this country have only one religion. It has been proven." He was blunt in accusing the Congress of doing the "dirty work of propagating the term 'Saffron Terrorism' as a politically motivated hoax.

Dubey contended that the Malegaon judgment has finally clarified "everything," and that the Congress "will have to face the consequences." He asked how the priorities of the previous government were to accuse Indians instead of arresting Pakistani terrorists. He alleged that from 2005 to 2013, the majority of India's blasts were carried out at the behest of Pakistan, but that the Congress-led UPA government tried to create "communal tension" rather than focusing on the real culprits.

Political Consequences and Responsibility

BJP, under the leadership of its IT department head Amit Malviya, has demanded an unconditional apology from Congress leaders Sonia and Rahul Gandhi for allegedly defaming "Sanatan Dharma" and branding innocent citizens terrorists. Malviya asserted that the "sinister plan" of the Congress to "create the bogey of saffron terror" has now "collapsed" and has been "buried for good."

The Malegaon blast on September 29, 2008, killed six people and injured over 100 near a mosque. The acquittal has rung in with opposing reactions, with victims' families mourning the decision and asking who the perpetrators were if not the accused. This verdict will probably intensify political discussion around national security, justice, and the fabricated "saffron terror" conspiracy during the lead-up to the general elections.
