Gyanvapi Mosque Survey: The Allahabad High Court announced today that the survey of Varanasi’s Gyanvapi mosque won’t take place until August 3, when the matter will receive a final ruling. After lengthy deliberations over the necessity of an Archaeological Survey of India survey, which has been demanded by the Hindu petitioners who contend that the mosque rests on the ruins of a temple, the court reserved its decision.
Arguments Presented in the Gyanvapi Mosque ASI Survey Case
“The ASI survey is necessary because Anjuman Masjid has said the structure in question (the temple) is based on imagination and it has nothing to do with ground reality. They say the mosque was never in possession of anyone else except Muslims since its inception,” said the lawyer for one of the petitioners. “I have research work of Neil G, who worked for 1975 to 1990, and I have photos which show disputed structure,” argued another petitioner.
Court Considers the Significance of ASI Survey in Dispute Resolution
The attorney contended that the survey is required for the resolution of the main action, which is a demand to do puja at the site every day, although the court stated that a decision on the evidence is not required at this time. The Allahabad High Court previously stated, “How can making puja a daily or weekly event lead to alteration of the character of the mosque if devotees like us can perform puja on one day? A survey is necessary for the suit’s disposal, he noted.
