As Air Quality Worsens Delhi Bans Construction Activities

In view of the deteriorating condition of air pollution in Delhi, several restrictions have been implemented in the city. On Sunday, the air quality (Delhi AQI) once again crossed 400 in Delhi, in view of which CAQM implemented the third stage of GRAP. Under this, there will be a complete ban on construction works and sabotage activities in the city.

Only last month, the Centre’s Panel on Air Quality (CAQM) directed the authorities to ban all construction and demolition activities in Delhi-NCR, except for essential projects. After this, after a slight improvement in air quality, that ban was withdrawn. However, after Delhi’s air deteriorated once again, the restrictions of GRAP Stage 3 have been implemented once again.

Air quality in very poor condition

According to the data of the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the AQI has reached the severe category in many areas of Delhi. AQI 429 was recorded in Anand Vihar area. Earlier, the city recorded a 24-hour average air quality index (AQI) of 370 (very poor) on Saturday.

An AQI between 0 and 50 is considered ‘good’, 51 and 100 ‘satisfactory’, 101 and 200 ‘moderate’, 201 and 300 ‘poor’, 301 and 400 ‘very poor’ and 401 and 500 ‘very poor’. AQI between is considered ‘severe’.

The AQI in the national capital had dropped to the “very poor” category on 26 November. Since then the air quality level has remained above the 300 mark. The Meteorological Department said that the relative humidity at 5.30 pm was 73 percent.
