Asaduddin Owaisi Highlights ‘Late BJP Leader’s’ Perspective on Palestine Solidarity Remark

Asaduddin Owaisi

Asaduddin Owaisi, the head of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), responded to the continuing conflict between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas on Monday by asserting that India has always supported Palestine. He asserted that the Congress‘ election caused a change in India’s position (with regard to the Palestinian cause).

Owaisi’s Reference to Late BJP Leader’s Palestine Remarks

“A late BJP leader once said about Palestine that land worth billions has been acquired. We had released a post stamp for solidarity with Palestine. This shifted when Congress came into power,” he was quoted as saying by news agency ANI. Owaisi was allegedly making reference to a popular video of late BJP leader and former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee speaking out in behalf of the Palestinian cause.

Owaisi Highlights Impact of Oslo Accords on Israel-Palestine Conflict

The Oslo Accords between Israel and Palestine from 1993 and 1995 were also mentioned by the head of AIMIM. “The Oslo Agreement came into existence which said that in theWest Bank and Gaza, an independent Palestinian country would be made. It has been 30 years now… The world knows that there is the Al-Aqsa mosque there. The Gaza Strip has been blocked for the last 16 years… It is an open-air prison,” the AIMIM leader said. Hamas terrorists launched an unprecedented offensive on Israel on Saturday, storming Israeli communities and launching missile barrages.

Tel Aviv’s Escalation in Response to Hamas Offensive

Later, Tel Aviv declared war on the militant group. Additionally, it began a significant airstrike campaign on the Gaza Strip and its environs. The violence has already claimed the lives of over 1100 people, and thousands more have been hurt or forced to flee their homes. There are also fears that Hamas has kidnapped more than 130 Israelis and foreign nationals.

Origins of the Israel-Palestine Conflict

The Israel-Palestine conflict originated as a result of Zionist Jews moving to Palestine, which was then a part of the Ottoman Empire, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries with the intention of creating a Jewish state. The State of Israel was finally founded as a result of this movement in 1948, which resulted in a conflict with Israel’s Arab neighbours and the eviction of Palestinian Arabs.
