Assam CM Himanta Sarma Orders High-Level Inquiry Into Death Of 7 Students In Guwahati Accident

Himanta Biswa Sarma

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday directed the state education department to set up a high-level committee to probe the circumstances leading to the accident that killed seven college students earlier this week.

Seven students of the Assam Engineering College were killed in Guwahati on Monday after a car rammed into a road divider and then rammed into another vehicle, police said.

Completion of a report by the proposed inquiry committee and its examination by the government, according to a release from the Chief Minister’s Office.

Sarma on Monday urged parents whose children live in college hostels to keep in constant touch with their children and appealed to the institute authorities to ensure that the hostel superintendents are more strict in their monitoring.

Speaking on the accident, Director General of Police G P Singh had told reporters that “prima facie it appears to be a case of drunken driving, but until the investigation is over, I cannot say for sure.”

The Chief Minister has also asked the Education Department to set up another committee to look into the current system of elections in colleges and universities.

The panel will also file a report on whether there is a need to review the system in view of frequent clashes between students in higher educational institutions during the pre-poll and post-poll periods.
Sarma directed the education department to constitute another panel to strengthen discipline, rules and regulations in hostels of educational institutions to prevent such incidents in future.

The committee will also look into strict enforcement of rules and regulations, complete prohibition of liquor and drugs in hostel premises and other issues.
The proposed panel will also recommend ways to promote healthy community life in hostels, the release said.
