At Critical Global Juncture, Sonia Gandhi Urges India to Defend Sovereignty and International Law, Rahul Gandhi Echoes Call for Moral Clarity

Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi have urged the government to uphold sovereignty, defend international law and maintain moral clarity in foreign policy. Their statements have sparked a strong political response from the BJP, highlighting ongoing tensions over India’s global strategy.

Rahul Gandhi: Senior Congress leader Sonia Gandhi has called on the Centre to defend India’s sovereignty and uphold international law as global tensions escalate. Describing the present situation as a “critical global juncture,” she expressed concern over what she termed India’s perceived silence on major international conflicts, including those involving Gaza and Iran.

Sonia Gandhi said that remaining silent during humanitarian crises and geopolitical confrontations amounts to a “surrender of values” and marks a departure from India’s long-standing diplomatic traditions. She urged New Delhi to speak responsibly, promote dialogue between conflicting nations, and actively support de-escalation efforts. She also stressed that the government must prioritise the safety and security of Indian citizens living and working abroad during volatile global developments.

Rahul Gandhi Questions Strategic Choices

Echoing similar concerns, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi criticised the government’s foreign policy direction and questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi over key strategic decisions. Rahul Gandhi argued that certain international trade agreements, particularly with the United States, could harm Indian farmers and compromise national autonomy.

He emphasised the need to protect India’s strategic resources, including data and agriculture, in an increasingly competitive global order. According to him, India must maintain moral clarity and avoid actions that dilute sovereignty under external pressure.

Political Clash Over Diplomacy

The BJP responded sharply to Rahul Gandhi’s remarks, accusing him of weakening India’s global standing and reviving past controversies linked to his statements on national security. The ruling party maintained that the government’s foreign policy remains balanced, strategic and firmly rooted in national interest.

The exchange underscores deep political differences between the Congress and the BJP over how India should navigate complex global challenges. As instability in West Asia and shifting alliances reshape international politics, the debate over India’s diplomatic posture continues to intensify.
