The Indian Railways has announced a massive revision in fares that will come into effect from July 1, 2025, which is expected to impact millions of travellers. As reported by India Today via Dailyhunt and DNP India, the update shows that ticket prices have been hiked substantially across express and superfast trains, including AC class, sleeper, and second class.

The Railway Ministry has stated that the rising cost of operating trains and the increase in fuel and maintenance costs are the main reasons for this increase in prices. This update is expected to guarantee better services, modernization of trains, and an increase in the overall passenger experience.

What Are the Revised Fares?

Customers will have to pay higher prices on long-distance and reserved travel beginning on July 1, 2025. The anticipated changes will look as follows:

  • AC 1st Class: 50-60 Rs. per 100Km increase

  • AC 2-Tier: an increase of 40-50 rupees per 100 km

  • AC 3-Tier: 30-40 increment per 100 km

  • Sleeper Class: 15-20% increase in every 100 km

  • Second Class (Reserved): 5-10 rise in Rs. per 100 km

The fare adjustment is applicable to all the mail, express, and superfast trains and even all the premium services of mail, express, and superfast trains like Rajdhani, Shatabdi, and Duronto Express. There is no plan yet to increase suburban and unreserved train fares on local trains.

Public Reaction and Passenger Concerns

As expected, the announcement has triggered a volley of discussions on social media as well as among frequent travellers. While some travellers may appreciate that there is a need for better infrastructure and service delivery, there are also some who are concerned about affordability, especially among long-distance travellers and those on low incomes.

Why This Matters

The Indian Railways is the backbone of the transport system in the country, transporting over 23 million passengers daily. Such a significant change will have an impact on travel budgets, tourism patterns, and perhaps even the migration patterns of workers and students.
