Senior Attorney Argues for Central Forces Deployment Oversight by High Court
Senior attorney Monika Arora brought up the argument in front of the bench. The deployment of central forces may be supervised by the high court. You ask the high court for more time, the bench said. The counsel responded by saying, “We have approached against the order of June 13 and please take it tomorrow.” After meeting with the state’s legal counsel, senior officials from both sides filed a petition with the supreme court, according to sources.
High Court Directs Election Body to Expedite Deployment of Central Forces for Secure Elections
The election body was told by the Calcutta High Court on Thursday to request the deployment of forces from the Centre within 48 hours. The high court had highlighted that since its order to deploy central forces in vulnerable areas for the election process on June 13 no substantial efforts had been made. The court had ordered the immediate requisition and deployment of central forces in the regions and districts that the SEC had designated as sensitive on June 13. Suvendu Adhikari, the leader of the BJP, and Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, a member of the Congress, were among the opposition lawmakers who petitioned the court for the deployment of federal soldiers to ensure free and fair elections. They asserted that the state had experienced widespread violence during the Kolkata Municipal Corporation elections in 2021 and the municipal elections in 2022.

Violence Mars Final Day of Nominations for West Bengal Panchayat Elections
The final day of nominations for the three-tiered West Bengal panchayat elections, which will be held next month, was characterised by violence and burning. As the police struggled to maintain order, numerous episodes of conflicts were recorded from various regions of the state. throughout the previous nine days, there have been reports of up to seven deaths throughout the state as a result of the violence. Mamata Banerjee, the chief minister of West Bengal, has said that the state’s panchayat poll nomination process is peaceful. The TMC leader also criticised opposing parties for attempting to exploit “one or two stray” events. The state is getting ready for its three-tier panchayat elections, which will involve a sizable electorate of over 5.67 crores. The democratic right of voters to choose representatives for almost 74,000 seats in zilla parishads, panchayat samitis, and gramme panchayats will be exercised. The three-tier Panchayati Raj system will hold elections for roughly 75,000 seats on July 8 with the results being tallied on July 11.
