Shaheed Bhagat Singh will now be the name of the airport in Chandigarh. On Wednesday, the airport’s naming ceremony was attended by Nirmala Sitharaman, the Union Finance Minister. “Delighted to be present for the Chandigarh International Airport naming event”.

PM Modi Confirmed The Move on Mann Ki Baat

In the 93rd episode of “Mann Ki Baat,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared that the Chandigarh airport would now be named after Shaheed Bhagat Singh as a tribute to the great freedom fighter. The airport in Chandigarh was formally christened on Wednesday. At the event were Punjab Governor Banwarilal Purohit, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, Union Minister VK Singh, Haryana Deputy CHIEF Minister Dushyant Chautala, and Home and Health Minister Anil Vij.

Meeting between Mann and Chautala had resolved


Bhagwant Mann, the chief minister of Punjab, and Dushyant Chautala, the deputy chief minister of Haryana, met last month to discuss renaming the airport. The Center had received a request from both state governments to rename the airport in honour of Shaheed Bhagat Singh. This was something that the people of Punjab and Haryana had long wished for. Captain Amarinder Singh, a former chief minister of Punjab, praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the decision. Since 2017, the Punjab administration, which was then led by Captain, has periodically brought up the issue with the Center.

An uproar had already broken out over the Chandigarh International Airport’s rebranding. The renaming of the airport to Shaheed-e-Azam Sardar Shaheed Bhagat Singh International Airport Mohali was a demand made by the Punjab government in 2017. Bhagat Singh’s name was not a point of contention for the Haryana government, but Mohali was.
Incorporated under the Companies Act of 2013, Chandigarh International Airport Limited is a joint venture between the governments of Punjab and Haryana and the Airports Authority of India (AAI). The airport’s international terminal is in the Mohali town of Jhuriheri, but the runway is in Chandigarh. The IAF is in charge of air traffic control and runway operations.
