Today in the Lok Sabha, opposition leaders protested outside the House's well over allegations that BJP member Chandra Prakash Joshi had exalted the abolished practice of "sati." Speaker Om Birla briefly adjourned the house to inspect the records and calm the situation amidst raucous protests. The MP for Chittorgarh in Rajasthan is Mr. Joshi.
When he mentioned Padmavati, the Queen of Mewar, who is thought to have self-immolated to defend her honour from invader Allaudin Khilji, Mr. Joshi started the discussion on the Motion of Thanks on the President's Address.
The NCP's Supriya, the DMK's Kanimozhi, Dayanidhi Maran, and A Raja, the Congress' K Muraleedharan, and AIMIM's Imtiaz Jaleel were all on their feet, alleging that Joshi had exalted the practise of "sati."
The claim was made by CP Joshi that he had not discussed the practise of sati but had instead claimed that Padmavati had committed "jauhar" (self-immolation) to save her honour.
He said, "I stand by my comments," as opposition supporters chanted in the House well.
Around 1:06 PM, opposition MPs stormed the Treasury benches in the lower house of the parliament, claiming Mr. Joshi had made offensive remarks. The house was suspended until 1:30 o'clock.
Demand for discussion on alleged frauds in investment
Earlier, protests from opposition parties demanding a discussion on alleged frauds in investment by public sector institutions like LIC and SBI, resulting loss in market value, forced both houses of the parliament to adjourn for three consecutive days. After meeting with floor leaders of opposition parties to break the impasse, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi and Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Arjun Ram Meghwal received approval from all opposition parties—aside from AAP and BRS—to allow the debate on the Motion of Thanks on the President's Address to take place today.
Mallikarjun Kharge, the leader of the opposition in the Rajya Sabha, stated on Monday that although the opposition is willing to support the Motion of Thanks, the "first priority" is for Prime Minister Narendra Modi to respond to the current Hindenburg-Adani controversy.
