BJP MLA T Raja Singh suspended form party over comments against Prophet Muhammad

Amid ongoing controversy over his remarks against a community, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday suspended its Telangana MLA Raja Singh.

Telangana BJP MLA T Raja Singh was today arrested for his alleged derogatory comments against Prophet Muhammad following protests in Hyderabad last night demanding action against him.

On Tuesday morning, the MLA was arrested and taken to the Bolarum police station on Tuesday after being booked under Sections 295(a), 153(a), 505 (1) (b) and 505 (2) of the Indian Penal Code.

The party’s Central Disciplinary Committee said in a statement that Singh had “expressed views contrary to the party’s position on various matters”. The BJP also issued a show cause notice, asking to explain within 10 days why he should not be expelled from the party.

He made the remarks while attacking stand-up comedian Munawar Faruqui, who recently performed in the city. While Singh, popularly known as Raja Bhaiya and Tiger Raja, tried to defend it as a “comedy video”, saying he made no mention of the Prophet, police registered cases against him after protests by Muslim organisations.

Following Raja Singh’s remarks, Muslims had threatened South Zone DCP of consequences if action is not initiated.

Protests erupted outside South Zone DCP office and Hyderabad Police Commissioner office demanding action on BJP MLA.

T Raja Singh was a member of the Telugu Desam Party. He later joined the BJP and is currently the party’s whip in Telangana.

Raja Singh has made several remarks appearing to be targeting the Muslim community.

In 2020, Facebook banned Singh from the platform and Instagram for allegedly promoting hate.

“We have banned Raja Singh from Facebook for violating our policy prohibiting those that promote or engage in violence and hate from having a presence on our platform,” a Facebook spokesperson had said.
