In her Budget 2025-26 speech, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman introduced a revamped version of the UDAN (Uday Desh Ka Aam Nagrik) scheme, aimed at enhancing regional air connectivity. The new plan will cover 120 new destinations, benefiting millions of passengers and supporting infrastructure development across India.
Expansion of Regional Connectivity with UDAN Scheme
The newly launched UDAN scheme is designed to improve air connectivity, especially in underserved regions. With plans to add 120 new destinations, the scheme aims to cater to four crore passengers over the next decade. The initiative also targets smaller airports, helipads, and airstrips in hilly and remote areas, including the North East and other aspirational regions. This will provide easier access to air travel for communities that were previously out of reach.
Support for Air Cargo and Infrastructure Enhancement
Along with passenger services, the government plans to boost air cargo operations. Financial support will be directed towards upgrading warehousing and infrastructure to handle high-value perishable goods, such as horticultural produce. Customs procedures and cargo screening will be streamlined to ensure a smoother experience for businesses.
Boosting Infrastructure in Bihar
Nirmala Sitharaman also proposed the development of Greenfield airports in Bihar to support the state’s future growth. These new airports, along with the expansion of Patna’s airport and the development of a brownfield airport at Bihta, will enhance the state’s connectivity. Furthermore, the government plans to provide financial aid for the Western Koshi Canal ERM Project, benefitting farmers in the Mithilanchal region.
India's aviation sector continues to thrive, and with these initiatives, the government aims to further fuel its growth, boosting economic development and job creation across the country.
