Responding to the bilateral interaction between China and India, the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson remarked that Xi Jinping and PM Modi engaged in a “candid and in-depth exchange of views” concerning the existing China-India relations and other matters of mutual interest. The official statement further stated that both nations should prioritise the broader interests of their bilateral ties and effectively address the border matter to “jointly safeguard peace and tranquility in the border region.”

Statement by China’s foreign ministry read, “President Xi stressed that improving China-India relations serves the common interests of the two countries and peoples, and is also conducive to peace, stability and development of the world and the region.” During the BRICS summit in South Africa, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping were seen walking together and engaging in a brief discussion.

Indo-China relations and LAC

In their brief meet, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed India’s apprehensions regarding the unresolved matters along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in the western sector of the India-China border regions to Xi Jinping. This insight was shared by India’s Foreign Secretary Vinay Mohan Kwatra. This interaction occurred with less than two weeks remaining before the upcoming G20 summit scheduled to take place in New Delhi.

This marks the second instance of an informal exchange between these two leaders since the Galwan clashes in May 2020. The prior occurrence took place in November 2022 during the G20 summit held in Bali, Indonesia. During that encounter, Prime Minister Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping engaged in a similar interaction. During their exchange, PM Modi extended courtesies and the two leaders discussed the imperative of “stabilizing” bilateral relations.
