A wig and a moustache have been attached to the idol of ‘Mahishasur’ by the organizers of a Durga Puja pandal in Kolkata. Actually, this statue looked exactly like a statue of Mahatma Gandhi. The idol kept in the pandal of Akhil Bharatiya Hindu Mahasabha was placed on the Ruby Bypass of the city.
West Bengal Congress leader Kaustav Bagchi on Sunday complained to the Kolkata Police for registering a zero FIR in the matter. Bagchi said portraying Gandhi as an ‘asura’ was an “act of sedition” and demanded an immediate halt to the worship. On the other hand, Chandrachud Goswami, the organizer of the puja pandal, said that he has not changed the idol himself, but he has been forced to make this change.
Goswami said, “Asura’s idol was similar to MK Gandhi, we don’t deny it. It has been changed. We got a lot of calls. We were forced to change it. We don’t accept this change.” Our freedom of expression has been curtailed. People should know that no one called Gandhi the Father of the Nation. No such resolution has been passed in this regard.”
Goswami, who is also the state working president of the Hindu Mahasabha, said that though he has made changes to the idol of the ‘asura’, he is not ready to accept the change. He said, ‘Kolkata police requested us to make changes. That’s why this change has been made. We do not accept these changes. We will campaign about Gandhi’s activities among the people in future. He is the person who divided our country.”
Meanwhile, Congress leader Bagchi said, “I have filed a complaint against Chandrachud Goswami and other office bearers of the state unit, because the idol of Asur is depicted as the father of the nation Mahatma Gandhi. This comes under sedition and national Totally detrimental to integrity. Hence a complaint has been lodged in the police station to register an FIR and take necessary steps. The complaint also states that the puja needs to be stopped immediately. I have filed the complaint after discussion with state Congress President Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury”.
