CBI gets custody of ex-Mumbai police chief Sanjay Pandey in connection with NSE phone tapping case

Sanjay Pandey, a former commissioner of the Mumbai Police, was taken into custody by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Saturday in connection with the phone-tapping case involving the National Stock Exchange (NSE). He was detained by a judge after being previously taken into custody by the Enforcement Directorate (ED).

According to news agency ANI, a Delhi judge granted Pandey four-day detention and stated that the CBI has enough evidence to continue the investigation.

About the suspected phone tapping, the CBI has filed an FIR against Pandey and his business, iSec Services Private Limited, for violations of the Indian Penal Code, Indian Telegraph Act, and Prevention of Corruption Act.

According to the CBI, iSec illegally intercepted MTNL lines at the NSE between 2009 and 2017 and recorded calls made by several NSE executives. According to the allegations, iSec conducted telephone monitoring without obtaining the appropriate authority’s consent, as required by the Indian Telegraph Act, and also without the knowledge or consent of NSE employees.

Pandey is now being held in judicial custody after being detained by the ED on July 19.

In connection with the NSE Money Laundering case, the ED submitted a charge sheet before the Delhi Rouse Avenue Court on September 9.

The names of Chitra Ramkrishna, Ravi Narain (both previous CEOs of the NSE), and Pandey and his company were listed on the charge sheet.

In conjunction with a money laundering investigation involving the alleged illegal phone tapping of exchange employees, Narain was detained by the ED in August. Narain is the third person in this case who has been detained by the ED.
