Federal and State Governments Commit to Serious Investigation
According to N Biren Singh, the case is being taken very seriously by the federal and state administrations. He revealed that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had personally called him and assured him that the case will be thoroughly investigated. N Biren Singh recalled his interaction with the Home Minister and related that Shah had advised him that this situation required immediate attention and that those involved ought to be charged in accordance with the law. “No one will be spared,” the home minister promised.
Investigating Manipur Student Deaths
On Wednesday, a team of CBI agents headed by the organization’s Special Director Ajay Bhatnagar arrived in Imphal, the capital of Manipur, and started looking into the incident. According to sources cited by PTI, the central investigation agency will concentrate on locating the crime scene, collecting the bodies, and apprehending the offenders. On Monday (September 25), images of the two students’ bodies—Phijam Hemjit (20) and Hijam Linthoingambi (17), who were allegedly abducted in July—went viral on social media, sparking violent protests in the state once more. In the two days of protests in Imphal Valley, the police used baton charges and tear gas, injuring over 150 students.
Mob Sets BJP Mandal Office Ablaze Amidst Manipur Unrest
In the meantime, a mob on Wednesday set a BJP mandal office in the Thoubal district on fire. The mob vandalised the office gate, broke windows and cracked the windscreen of a car that was parked outside. Additionally, protesters burned tyres and blocked the Indo-Myanmar highway with wooden logs and abandoned power poles. As police used tear gas, fake bombs, and live ammunition to disperse the mob, who retaliated with slingshots and stones, the situation worsened.
Manipur Declares Whole State as ‘Disturbed Area’
The Manipur administration has designated the entire state as a “disturbed area” due to the current state of law and order. According to a statement from the state administration, the entire state, with the exception of 19 particular police station areas, has been designated as a “disturbed area” under the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA).
