“Celebrating Pakistan’s victory sedition”: Three J&K students arrested in Agra

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s office has tweeted this morning saying that those celebrating Pakistan’s victory will be charged with sedition. A day earlier, three Kashmiri students were arrested in Agra for allegedly celebrating Pakistan’s victory over India in the T20 World Cup.

These three accused are engineering students of Raja Balwant Singh College, Agra. Arshid Yusuf and Inayat Altaf Sheikh are in their third year of college, while Shaukat Ahmed Ganai is in fourth year.

All three have been accused of promoting enmity between communities on the basis of religion and cyber-terrorism. A tweet from the Chief Minister’s Office indicated that he may also face sedition charges.

The college on Monday suspended the three students, saying they were found “involved in acts of indiscipline by posting positions in favor of Pakistan” after the India-Pakistan match. Four more people have been arrested in the same case in Uttar Pradesh. Of these, three arrests have been made in Bareilly and one in Lucknow.

Agra City Superintendent of Police Vikas Kumar told news agency ANI, “The incident came to light after the match in which anti-national remarks were made. We received a complaint about this and an FIR was also registered. He was arrested after investigation.”

Knowing the news of pro-Pakistan sloganeering in the college, several leaders of the right-wing group reached the college campus in Bichpuri and started raising slogans against Pakistan. The leaders of BJP and other factions clashed with the policemen present on the spot.
