The Union Ministry of External Affairs has declined West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's request to attend the World Peace Conference scheduled for October at the Vatican.

The permission was denied due to a "political angle" and because the "event is not commensurate in status for participation by the chief minister of a state".

Mamata Banerjee was invited to attend an international peace conference this year.

Pope Francis, German chancellor Angela Merkel and the Grand Imam of Egypt's Al-Alzhar, Ahmad al-Tayyib, among others, are expected to attend the conference scheduled on October 6 and 7, 2021.
