The Union Ministry of Urban Development has issued a notice announcing its intention to take control of 123 properties from the Waqf Board, including Delhi's Jama Masjid. The transfer of the Jama Masjid to the Waqf Board had occurred during the tenure of the Manmohan Singh government. This development follows a decision made by the ministry in February of this year, where it was determined that these properties, encompassing mosques, dargahs, and graveyards, would be taken over. The decision was based on the findings of a two-member committee.
On February 8, the deputy land and development officer communicated to the Waqf Board about the resolution to dissociate the board from all matters concerning these 123 properties. The Land and Development Office (L&DO) of the central ministry reported that the committee, led by retired Justice S. P. Garg, had not received any opposition or objections from the Delhi Waqf Board, according to their submitted report.
"It is evident from the above facts that Delhi Waqf Board does not have any stake in the listed properties, neither have they shown any interest in the properties nor filed any objections or claims. It is, therefore, decided to absolve Delhi Waqf Board from all matters pertaining to '123 Waqf Properties'," said the L&DO letter.
Delhi High Court ruled that the Union government could perform a physical inspection of the 123 properties
In May, the Delhi High Court ruled that the Union government could perform a physical inspection of the 123 properties, which are currently being claimed by the Delhi Waqf Board.
"Some people are spreading lies about it, the proof of this is in front of all of you. We will not allow anyone to occupy the properties of the Waqf Board," he had said in a tweet.
The decision has sparked strong reactions, particularly from Aam Aadmi Party MLA and board chairman Amanatullah Khan. He expressed that this resolution has caused significant anxiety, fear, and discontentment within the Muslim community.
