Centre renames Nehru Memorial as Prime Ministers' Museum, opposition reacts

The name of Nehru Memorial Museum and Library has now been officially changed to PM Museum and Library. The name change was approved on the occasion of Independence Day. This name change has become effective from Monday (August 14).

Vice Chairman of the Executive Council of PM Museum and Library A. Surya Prakash wrote on social media platform X, "In line with the democratization and diversification of the society, the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library (NMML) is now the Prime Minister's Museum and Library (PMML) Society with effect from 14th August 2023. Happy Independence Day!"

The decision to change the name was taken in June

The decision to rename the Nehru Memorial Museum was taken in a special meeting chaired by Defense Minister Rajnath Singh in June 2023. Surya Prakash told that the process of renaming started in June and it is just a coincidence that the work was completed on the eve of Independence Day.

Why was the decision to change the name taken?

New Delhi Location Teen Murti Bhawan used to be the official residence of India's first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. Later this complex was converted into a museum and the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library was established. In 2016, Prime Minister Narendra Modi mooted an idea that there should be a museum dedicated to all the Prime Ministers of India inside the Teen Murti complex, which was approved by the Executive Council of the Nehru Memorial.

In the year 2022, this museum dedicated to the Prime Ministers was completed, after which it was opened to the public in April 2022. Being a museum of all the Prime Ministers, the Executive Council felt that the name should reflect its present form. For this reason, the decision to change the name was taken in the last June meeting. Nripendra Mishra, who was the Chief Secretary to PM Modi, is the President of the Executive Council of the PM Museum.

Political battle broke out over the name change

In June, when the decision to change the name of the Nehru Memorial was taken, the Congress attacked the Modi government over it. Congress National President Mallikarjun Kharge had said that those who have no history, they have gone to erase the history of others. Before changing the name, the personality of the Prime Minister cannot be reduced.

BJP National President JP Nadda had said that the Congress is not able to accept a simple fact that apart from one dynasty, other leaders have also served and built the country for this country. He had tweeted that 'Prime Minister's Museum is an effort beyond politics and Congress lacks the vision to realize it'.
