Same-sex marriages: The Centre today asked the Supreme Court to consider referring the issues addressed in the petitions seeking legal recognition of same-sex weddings to Parliament.

General Mehta remarks on the fifth day of the trial

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the Centre, told a five-judge Constitution bench led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud that the high court is dealing with a "very complex subject" with "profound social impact." 'The real question is who decides what constitutes marriage and between whom,' General Mehta remarked on the fifth day of the trial.

The case is currently being heard in court

He informed the bench, which also included Justices SK Kaul, SR Bhat, Hima Kohli, and PS Narasimha, that there would be consequences on several other acts that would necessitate a debate in society and in various state legislatures.
