Chaos ? Amid Nationwide Unrest, Indian Govt Bans CJP Protest Instagram Handle After Violent Student-Police Confrontations

The official Instagram account of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) was blocked in India on a legal request, a day after the movement's march to Parliament turned violent. It was restored within minutes, but tensions remain high, with the Delhi High Court now examining allegations of excessive police force against protesters.

CJP Protest: India’s youth-led protest movement has collided head-on with the state after the government moved to restrict the Instagram account driving the nationwide agitation over alleged NEET exam irregularities.

The Ban and Swift Reversal

The Cockroach Janta Party’s official Instagram handle was withheld in India following a legal request, with users seeing a message citing content restriction. Founder Abhijeet Dipke flagged the takedown on X, blaming the government directly. The account was restored within minutes, but the episode has become a fresh flashpoint in an already volatile standoff.

What Triggered It

The action came a day after CJP’s march to Parliament turned violent, one of the most serious escalations since the movement began camping at Jantar Mantar in June, demanding Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation over the NEET-UG paper leak.

The Delhi High Court has directed the government and Delhi Police to respond to petitions alleging excessive force against protesters, including women and children, and ordered authorities to preserve related records. Petitioners’ lawyers argued demonstrators were exercising their right to peaceful protest; the government’s counsel called the claims unsustainable.

A Pattern of Digital Pressure

CJP Protest: This isn’t CJP‘s first brush with online suppression. Its X account was withheld days after launch, and Dipke has alleged hacking, death threats, and a government takedown of the movement’s website. A separate, unverified complaint claims the Instagram account was once operated from outside India.

With court scrutiny underway, a hospitalised hunger striker in Sonam Wangchuk, and a briefly banned Instagram account fueling further outrage, the confrontation between authorities and India’s Gen Z-driven protest movement shows no sign of cooling.
