Chhattisgarh set precedent, recruits 13 transgenders as police constables

The Chhattisgarh State Police Force has recruited 13 transgender constables. An official provided this information on Wednesday. This is the largest such recruitment from the still marginalized community of the country. The Supreme Court recognized the transgender community in the country in 2014. These 13 constables will join the police force along with two other well-known transgender officers.

Chhattisgarh Senior Police Officer DM Awasthi said about this, ‘We have recruited transgender people as constables for the first time and I personally congratulate them.’

In the year 2017, Tamil Nadu became the first state where a transgender was recruited, after three years after the historic decision given by the Supreme Court.

Chhattisgarh CM Bhupesh Baghel also informed about this. He tweeted, ‘Results of Raipur Range Police Constable Recruitment Exam have been declared. In this examination, 13 candidates of the third gender community have been selected for the post of police constable and two candidates are in the venturing list. ‘

Naina Sori, one of the selected for the post of constable, said that despite passing the higher secondary examination, her life so far has been spent begging in the streets. He is happy that now he will not have to go through those situations because he has achieved this feat on the strength of his hard work.

All selected people will undergo a medical test this month. After that, they will be given appointment letters and then everyone will be sent for training. Among the youths who have been selected as soldiers in Raipur, in addition to the general soldier, 46 drivers, 19 cooks and one assistant constable are included.
