During the journey, Singh and Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Tikaram Meena were assigned different coaches, while Constable Amay Ghanashyam Acharya and Head Constable Hawa Narendra Paramar were in separate sleeper coaches. After half an hour into the journey, Acharya checked on Singh and Meena and was informed that Singh was unwell and wished to deboard at Valsad station.
However, after discussing the matter with the seniors, Singh was asked to complete his duty before seeking treatment, but he refused. Subsequently, he was moved to another coach to rest, and his rifle was taken away temporarily. Nonetheless, a confrontation ensued between Acharya and Singh when Singh insisted on having his rifle back. During the altercation, Singh aggressively tried to snatch the rifle from Acharya and even grabbed his neck before eventually leaving the coach. This incident led to the unfortunate shooting that resulted in casualties on the train.
