Railway Protection Force (RPF) Constable Chetan Singh shot his senior and three passengers on the Jaipur-Mumbai Central Express train near Palghar station in Maharashtra. He had expressed a desire to get off the train at Valsad station in Gujarat, claiming he was unwell. They deboarded at Surat and later boarded the Jaipur-Mumbai Superfast Express at approximately 2:53 am.

During the journey, Singh and Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Tikaram Meena were assigned different coaches, while Constable Amay Ghanashyam Acharya and Head Constable Hawa Narendra Paramar were in separate sleeper coaches. After half an hour into the journey, Acharya checked on Singh and Meena and was informed that Singh was unwell and wished to deboard at Valsad station.

However, after discussing the matter with the seniors, Singh was asked to complete his duty before seeking treatment, but he refused. Subsequently, he was moved to another coach to rest, and his rifle was taken away temporarily. Nonetheless, a confrontation ensued between Acharya and Singh when Singh insisted on having his rifle back. During the altercation, Singh aggressively tried to snatch the rifle from Acharya and even grabbed his neck before eventually leaving the coach. This incident led to the unfortunate shooting that resulted in casualties on the train.
