Congress Leader Dheeraj Sahu's Hidden Wealth Tops Rs 300 Crore, Machines Malfunction in the Process

Dheeraj Sahu: For the past 72 hours, Dheeraj Prasad Sahu, a Congress member from Jharkhand's Rajya Sabha, has been the target of raids by the Income Tax Department on his home and offices. Over this time frame, over Rs 300 crore worth of cash has been retrieved. While counting, the equipment brought in to count the recovered cash sustained damage.

Ordering New Machinery

Only after placing an order for new machinery could the department start counting. The counting process was hampered even on the first day, Wednesday, when the machines malfunctioned after counting Rs 150 crore. The Income Tax Department has now installed thirty machines. The notes are being counted in the SBI branches in Sambalpur and Balangir at the request of Income Tax officials, according to a senior SBI official in Sambalpur. The note-counting process still going on Saturday as well.

Counting Commences After Machinery Order

Senior SBI officials in Sambalpur have stated that the notes are being counted in both Balangir and Sambalp at the request of Income Tax officials. Former IT Commissioner of Odisha Sharat Chandra Das has speculated that this may be the largest cash seizure by the Income Tax Department in Odisha's history.

Income Tax Raid Discovers 156 Bags

During a raid on the spirits company manager's home in Sudapada, Balangir district, on Friday, the Income Tax team found 156 bags filled with cash. This sum may be more than Rs 100 crore. More than Rs 200 crore in cash that was locked away in cabinets was taken by Income Tax Department officials during a raid on the Balangir office of Baldev Sahu and Group of Companies earlier on Wednesday and Thursday.

Income Tax Department Raids Multiple Locations in Odisha

The team from the Income Tax Department in Odisha also searched the Rani Sati Rice Mill, the company's factory and office in Boudh, the homes of a few company officials, and the corporate office of Boudh Distillery Private Limited in Palasapalli, Bhubaneswar. Significant sums of money have also been taken from the Group of Companies Limited office in Sambalpur and the Baldev Sahu country spirits factory in Dhanupali.

With the recovery of about Rs 300 crore from the Income Tax Department's raid on the home of Congress Rajya Sabha member from Jharkhand, Dheeraj Sahu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has poked fun at the opposition party. This, he has said, is the real deal when it comes to leaders speaking out against corruption. It was also made plain that they would have to return every penny that had been taken from the public and that a complete accounting of the money had been taken would be required. It was dubbed Modi's assurance.

PM Modi Exposes Cash Hoard in Congress Leader's Hideout

The Prime Minister shared the report on Twitter along with a photo of cash found in Dheeraj Sahu's hiding places. "Countrymen should look at the pile of these notes and then listen to the speeches on honesty of their leaders…," the PM wrote. The prime minister once more declared, "Every penny of what has been looted from the public will have to be returned," following the laughing emoji. That's Modi's assurance.
